I am Steve Whitfield, principal of Martel School. I have had the honor of being the Martel School principal for over twenty years.
I graduated from Colby College with a degree in history and taught seventh and eighth grade for seven and one half years. I then received my master's degree in School Administration from the University of Southern Maine. I served Lewiston Junior High (Lewiston Middle School) for seven and one half years before having the opportunity to be the principal at Martel.
I live on the coast with my wife and cat. Our grown daughter lives nearby and works for Colby College. My wife and I love to travel and have had the chance to travel to many interesting places including Australia. I love sports, especially basketball. I coach one of the Martel teams.
I am very fortunate to work with a Martel staff that is wonderful and most have been serving Martel for many, many years. Over the years, I have enjoyed working with many great students and their families. I have been proud that we often receive compliments on the politeness of Martel students.
As reported in the news, Lewiston Public Schools has the opportunity to replace Martel School in a couple of the years. We will miss this great old building, but will look forward to the new and modern facilities and the increased opportunities for students.
