February News

Dear Martel Community,

The Lewiston School Committee would like to invite parents and community members to a “Mission, Vision, and Goals Open Discussion” on February 8, 2016. There will be a spaghetti dinner at 5:30 PM, followed by the discussion. The dinner has no charge, but you are expected to stay for the discussion. The meeting is for adults only and expected to end at 8:00 PM. Tickets are required and can be obtained by calling our school at 795-4130. There is a limit on tickets, so please call soon. The dinner and discussion will be held at the Green Ladle (on the grounds of Lewiston High School).

On January 19th Martel School hosted our annual Martin Luther King Day Read-in. Bates’ students, staff, and friends came to Martel to read books with our fourth, fifth, and sixth graders about Martin Luther King and discuss his message. One highlight is Bates Dean James Reese calling his father to have him speak about his first-hand account about being at the “I Have a Dream” speech by Dr. King with our sixth graders.

The elementary basketball season is entering its last few weeks. Our teams have learned a lot and made great improvement. They have showed very good sportsmanship.

February Vacation will start at the end of the day February 12th and school will restart on February 22.

I would like to remind you that the Lewiston School Committee has authorized a late start policy for bad weather days. Therefore, please pay attention to the announcements that are given on bad weather days. There may be a one hour delay, a two hour delay, or a cancellation.

The Building Committee for the new elementary school has been working hard in many areas. The committee has a basic design for the site and will be working on the outside appearance.

Congratulations are due to Evelyn LeBlond, who won our annual Geography Bee held earlier this week. She is now entered into the State Competition.

A second round of parent/teacher conferences will be held the week of March 21st.

Signup sheets will go out at a later date.
